We primarily engaged in work related to global public health,
especially the diseases of poverty: AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
Increasingly we are focused on scientific and technical aspects of the
development of drugs and vaccines for infectious diseases.
In addition to working on these issues directly, the foundation has
worked in conjunction with, and advanced funds to help support, a
number of other organizations also working in these areas.
Specific direct activities of the foundation have included:
- Filing shareholder proposals with Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb
relating to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Working with the companies to
understand their perspectives, and encouraging them in the development
of appropriate public policy responses.
- Working with Sister Doris Gormley and the Interfaith Center on
Corporate Responsibility on a related shareholder proposal presented
by ICCR to Bristol-Myers Squibb.
- Supporting the attendance by John Iverson to the Global Network
of People Living with AIDS Conference in Kampala, Uganda.
- Attending several conferences related to global public health:
- Africa's Right to Health workshop
- Bay Area International Health Conference
- RESULTS Educational Fund annual conference
- Participating in bi-weekly meeting of the Association for India's
Development.
- Attending courses on molecular biology and biochemistry through
UC Berkeley extension.
- Completing the GRE General and Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular
Biology exams.
